Greetings, Old Man Winter
"Wait, close your eyes and breathe. I smell snow! I love snow. Everything’s magical when it snows, everything looks pretty. The clothes are great. Coats, scarves, gloves, hats…” – Gilmore Girls, Love and War and Snow
Hello Dear Friend,
Life has been somewhat crazy since my last letter. Between friends and family visits, dealing with health issues and minor health scares caused by precautious doctors, vacation days scattered among many hours spent focusing on some pretty big design-heavy projects at work and getting ready for and celebrating the holidays I’ve struggled to find time to write.
Winter has finally settled into the Carolina Mountains. As Jack Frost rides the brisk winter winds he stretches out his long icy fingers and Winter makes a sweep through my little mountain town. The winding curved roads with their canopies of trees reach out as if to greet a long awaited old friend.
As the day breaks, pale yellow and orange amber hues peak through the blue-gray winter clouds and the snow decides it can’t be contained anymore as white flakes make their escape and gently float in the sky making their descent to the green earth below. Occasionally I catch a glimpse of blue overhead, hidden above the gray skirt currently covering the sky as if to be playing a game of hide-and-seek.
So here I sit. Currently nestled underneath a warm blanket, taking in the glorious aroma of my Fraser Fir candle and enjoying the twinkle lights that illuminate my Christmas tree. As I sip on my Christmas inspired coffee – there’s a peppermint cocoa packet mixed in – I’ve finally made the time to write.
I feel like when the wintery weather hits it gives the world an excuse to take a time out even if it’s just for a moment. Of course, for us with responsibilities the winter weather can feel anything but a time to take a break. It can bring stress, anxiety and even some bruises and/or broken bones leading to bad memories and shivers as we curse into the wind. I've experienced those feeling I just mentioned just like anyone else. But for me, winter always seems to bring beauty even in the brokenness. As the world spins madly on something about the wintery cold wet white brings hope and encouragement to me even when I’m weary. When the world seems to come to a standstill or at least gets put on a delay it always seems to bring me promises that there is always chances for new beginnings and adventures.
With love,
